S. Cristina Castle.
The History
S. Cristina's XVII Century Castle lies in a strategic position at the crossroad with Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany, ten minutes drive north of Lake Bolsena, only 3 km away from Grotte di Castro, a fascinating ancient village of Etruscan origin which is suspended on top of a rock. Just below the Castle a typical XVIII Century farmhouse has just been restored to offer a comfortable and warm hospitality in its picturesque apartments.
The fairy tale Castle is most romantic with its castellated turret rising above age old woods. It has a long association with powerful Prelates who played a key role in forming the Vatican State which culminated in Pope Pius IX's chief advisor, Cardinal Prospero Caterini, choosing the Castello in 1848 as his personal residence. His descendants still use this as a country home. This is a wonderful place to stay, with the opportunity of watersports or just lazing on the beach at Lake Bolsena, horse riding, mountain biking or hiking in the Monte Rufeno National Park. |
